Home Inspections

We have learned the hard way, you have to very thoroughly inspect every inch of a house before buying or renting. We suggest going as far as hiring a professional, as well as doing your own inspection. We will never again rent a house without having a mold inspection done by a pro. We have now dealt with three houses that either had an issue, or acquired an issue due to poor upkeep and leaks. It seems we cannot escape toxic mold, but we are learning how to guard ourselves, know what to look for, and how to build a house that will not grow mold, (see section on building a safe home)

A mold inspection should be done on any home, regardless of age. A home that has just been built is as susceptible, (actually more so), than a house built 100 years ago! A professional inspection is a must. Make sure that your inspector does not work for the County. Hire an actual mold inspector, not just a typical house inspector.  Mold inspectors are trained specifically in mold inspections, and can run test and tell you what you are up against if anything.

Do your own visual inspection as well. Let your nose guide you too. Your nose is a very useful tool for detecting molds, use it. Beware of homes newly finished, or recently remodeled, as they have a strong odor of chemicals, paint, and other smells, that can mask the smell of any mold that may be present.

If you, or your inspector find mold present, unless the house means alot to you, or the mold damage is very minimal, you may be best to count your blessings that you found it before spending any money, and move on.

Our next step is to take a course on mold inspection so we can be an even bigger help to others, by doing inspections and noting problem areas that need attention.
